Consoles cost less than gaming PCs. Newer consoles can be used to stream movies, TV shows, and music — adding another perk to owning a console. PS5 and Xbox Series X are the most expensive consoles so far (around €500 in EU). Before committing to a console, consider which one offers the games
you prefer, as not all consoles offer the same range of games.
A decent gaming rig will usually cost way more than a console. However, note that a gaming PC can be repaired and upgraded much more easily, meaning it could cost you less in the long run. Not to mention all the other things you can use a powerful PC for, such as video editing, programming, and more.
Buy a computer without an operating system. You will probably get Linux operating system pre-installed. If you need a Windows installation and license, feel free to negotiate this with me also.
How much working memory is “enough” depends on the different roles and needs of the modern user.
Nowdays it is considered that 8 GB of RAM is optimal for a computer. Optimal for browsing the web, running a video game, watching a movie in HD quality or perform more demanding tasks as well.
However, 16 GB of RAM is ideal to multitask smoothly (perform more activities at the same time – running many web browser tabs, various applications like text processor, spreadsheet editor and mail browser), play modern video games, edit video projects etc. In fact why not go all the way and buy 32GB. You can’t go wrong with investing in more RAM.
When buying a laptop, you should pay attention to whether it supports upgrading the RAM at all. Laptops can be manufactured with soldered memory. This means that the memory is permanently fixed on the motherboard and as such cannot be upgraded. If the upgrade is possible, then you will rely on SO-DIMM modules that fit into one or two available slots.
You will surly benefit because of following computer upgrade steps. Definitely double the amount of RAM installed. Get rid of the mechanical drive by installing a SSD drive instead, depending on which type your computer supports. The purchase of these two components will cost you around € 170,00. If you prefer quality and better performance at least €250,00.
In order for your computer to run smoothly, I definitely recommend a
fresh Windows installation accompanied by all the necessary drivers and
applications.
Users who leverage the computer intensively i.e. frequently install and remove different kind of applications and software, should by some estimates do a fresh installation of Windows every 6 months.
Also a fresh installation can improve the battery span of a laptop. Often it is in fact the most effective method for eliminating viruses and other types of malware.
Processor (CPU)
AMD or Intel, which one are you? Optimally a 8-core processor is the right way to go. The heart of your computer should be powerful and sufficiently cooled.
SSD drive
For an operating system drive, you definitely want (or upgrade to) a NVMe m.2 PCI-E Gen4 type. Abandon the mechanical SATA drive as soon as possible! Even a SATA3 SSD is much more efficient.
Mechanical SATA drive
5400 or 7200 rpm. Obsolete to use as primary disk. Useful for specific purposes only such as archiving, backup or video surveillance / phone call recordings.
Graphics porcessing unit (GPU)
If you want to game, watch content in 4k resolution (even on multiple display), edit photo or video, then you sholud invest in AMD or nVidia graphics card. The onboard graphics (integrated on the motherboard) is only sufficient for nondemanding work.
Power supply (PSU)
Seasonic and Corsair are leading brands. Adequate wattage is needed to power all the PC components (even ones you plan on installing in the future). Seek for those with at least silver/gold 80+ certificate.
